What are the best neighborhoods in Wilmington, NC? The honest answer is that it depends on what you want nearby. This guide sorts Wilmington-area neighborhoods by the public amenities around them, including parks, trails, libraries, hospitals and beach access, using official sources. Use it to build your shortlist, then check flood risk, taxes and school assignments for each address.
I’m Tabi, a REALTOR® with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage. Every “best neighborhoods” list you’ll find online is really someone else’s opinion about what matters. Yours might be a greenway at the end of the street, a short drive to the hospital, a dog park or a beach access you can walk to. So instead of ranking neighborhoods, I’ve mapped what’s actually near each one. You decide what matters most.
Downtown Wilmington and the south end of the city
- Riverwalk: about 1.75 miles along the Cape Fear River, from Nun Street to the Isabel Holmes Bridge. It connects to the River to the Sea Bikeway and the East Coast Greenway (City of Wilmington). The decking is being replaced in phases.
- River to the Sea Bikeway: an 11-mile route from downtown to Wrightsville Beach, using a mix of neighborhood streets, paths and some busier roads.
- Greenfield Park: 250 acres just south of downtown, with a 4.8-mile paved path around Greenfield Lake (City of Wilmington).
- Main Library: New Hanover County’s main library is now at 230 Grace Street downtown. The old Chestnut Street building closed in 2025.

Midtown, UNCW and Pine Valley
- Gary Shell Cross-City Trail: a 15-mile off-road, multi-use trail that runs from Wade Park through Halyburton Park and Empie Park to the Heide Trask Drawbridge at Wrightsville Beach, passing UNCW and the Cameron Art Museum (City of Wilmington).
- Halyburton Park: 60 acres, about 70% left natural, with a 1.3-mile paved loop and a nature center (City of Wilmington).
- Empie Park: 32 acres, home to the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex (24 lighted courts) and a 2-acre dog park.
- Hugh MacRae Park: a large county park near South College Road and Oleander Drive.
- Pine Valley Library: 3802 South College Road.
- Hospital access: Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital are at 2131 South 17th Street. NHRMC is the region’s only Level II trauma center (Novant Health).

Ogden, Mayfaire, Porters Neck and the north side
- Ogden Park: ball fields, lighted tennis courts, a lighted dog park, a 1-mile trail and a 10,000-square-foot skatepark (New Hanover County Parks Conservancy).
- Smith Creek Park: a 35-acre spring-fed lake with a 1.3-mile loop. A Phase 2 expansion that opened in August 2026 added 85 acres, mostly left natural, and a 1-mile paved ADA-accessible trail (WECT, August 4, 2026).
- Military Cutoff Road sidepath: about 2.8 miles along the east side of the road (Walk Wilmington plan, 2023).
- Northeast Regional Library: on Military Cutoff Road.
- Hospital access: Novant Health Scotts Hill Medical Center opened July 2, 2026, north of Porters Neck along the US 17 corridor, with 66 beds, an emergency department and 8 operating rooms (Novant Health).

Masonboro, Monkey Junction and Riverlights
- Veterans Park: 212 acres off Carolina Beach Road, with lighted athletic fields, 9 lighted tennis courts (3 lined for pickleball) and a half-mile paved trail.
- Riverlights: the master-planned community’s amenities include about 8 miles of trails, a 3-mile loop around a 38-acre lake and Cape Fear River frontage, according to the developer. Ask about any HOA rules on amenity access.

Castle Hayne, Northchase and Hightsville
- Northern Regional Park (formerly Castle Hayne Park), 4700 Old Avenue: an 18-hole disc golf course, 6 lighted pickleball courts, a bike pump track and a 1.7-mile paved trail.
- Parts of this area sit along the Northeast Cape Fear River, so check flood maps carefully for any address.

The beach towns
- Wrightsville Beach: 44 numbered public beach accesses, 7 of them ADA-accessible, plus 13 lifeguard stands in season (Town of Wrightsville Beach).
- Carolina Beach: Carolina Beach Lake Park has a lake of just over 10 acres with a 0.67-mile walking path (Town of Carolina Beach). Carolina Beach State Park has nearly 9 miles of trails, including the wheelchair-accessible Flytrap Trail (NC State Parks). The town lends beach wheelchairs.

Across the river and up the coast
- Leland (Brunswick County): newer master-planned communities, many with their own amenity centers, and generally lower home prices than the City of Wilmington. See my Leland area page and Leland buyer’s guide.
- Hampstead (Pender County): Hampstead Kiwanis Park covers 53 acres with lighted fields, courts, a trail and two playgrounds (Pender County Parks). Topsail Island is a short drive. See my Hampstead area page.

Schools: check the assignment for each address
I don’t rate or rank schools. But if schools are on your list, here’s what matters right now. As of August 2026, New Hanover County’s elementary, middle and high schools were at about 85%, 89% and 95% of capacity, compared with an ideal of about 80%. A $320 million school bond is on the November 2026 ballot (WilmingtonBiz, August 12, 2026). The school board has discussed small boundary adjustments but hasn’t adopted a plan. Pender County Schools is also running a growth-planning process in fall 2026.
