School choice applications and North Carolina’s Opportunity Scholarship both open months before the school year. Plan your closing around those dates.

When a move includes enrolling a student, the school calendar often drives the whole timeline, and a few deadlines catch people off guard. This guide covers the logistics: how assignment works, what to bring to enroll, and the dates to plan around. It doesn’t rank or rate schools. For that, I’ll point you to the official sources so you can look at the data yourself.
Three school districts, depending on where you buy
The Wilmington area spans three counties, and each has its own school district:
- New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) serves Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Castle Hayne.
- Brunswick County Schools serves Leland and the rest of Brunswick County.
- Pender County Schools serves Hampstead, Rocky Point, and the rest of Pender County.
Each district sets its own assignment zones, calendar, and enrollment process. If you’re comparing homes in more than one county, check each district’s rules. How school assignment works
In all three districts, your home address determines your assigned school. A few things to know:
- Attendance zones can change. NHCS schools are running near or above their optimal capacity, and the board has discussed small-scale “micro-redistricting,” though no plan has been adopted. Pender County Schools began a redistricting process in August 2026. Always confirm the current assignment for a specific address with the district.
- A neighborhood name doesn’t guarantee a school. Two homes in the same subdivision can occasionally be zoned differently. Use the district’s official address lookup tool for the exact address.
- Listing descriptions can be out of date. Schools named in a listing are a starting point, not a guarantee. Verify with the district.
What you need to enroll in New Hanover County Schools
According to NHCS, you’ll need these documents to enroll a new student:
- Proof of residency in the parent or guardian’s name: a current property tax statement, deed, mortgage statement, lease, homeowners or renters insurance policy, or a utility bill from the last 30 days
- A certified birth certificate or other proof of age
- A parent or guardian photo ID
- A notarized Safe Schools Affidavit (grades 1–12)
- Custody documents, if applicable
- A transcript for middle and high school students
- An immunization record and a North Carolina health assessment signed by a licensed provider. State law requires both within 30 days of enrollment.
The detail that trips people up: NHCS does not list a purchase contract as proof of residency. If you’re buying, you’ll generally need to close (or have a lease) before you can enroll at your new address. Brunswick and Pender have their own document lists, so check with those districts if you’re buying there.
The dates to plan around
School choice and magnet applications (winter to early spring)
NHCS offers magnet and choice programs with an application window each year, and a lottery may be held if applications exceed available seats. In 2026, the NHCS choice application deadline was April 10, with no extensions. If you want to apply for the following school year, plan to be in the process by early spring.
Opportunity Scholarship (February)
North Carolina’s Opportunity Scholarship helps pay private school tuition. The state agency that runs it says the application for the 2027–28 school year will open on the first Monday in February 2027. For 2025–26, the priority window ran from February 2 to March 2. Public charter school lotteries (winter to early spring)
North Carolina’s public charter schools are tuition-free and enroll by lottery when applications exceed available seats. Each charter sets its own application window and lottery date, so check each school’s website. The NC Department of Public Instruction’s Office of Charter Schools lists every charter school in the state.
Kindergarten age
In North Carolina, a child generally must be 5 on or before August 31 to start kindergarten that school year.
The first day of school
North Carolina law generally sets the start of traditional-calendar public schools in late August. Some schools use year-round or modified calendars. Check your district’s current calendar.
Timing your move and closing
Here’s how I help buyers build a timeline around school dates:
- If you want to start at the beginning of the school year, aim to close by early-to-mid summer. That leaves time to enroll, get health records in order, and settle in before late August.
- If you’re moving mid-year, that’s very doable. Enroll as soon as you have proof of residency, and bring immunization records and the health assessment within 30 days.
- If school choice or a scholarship matters to you, work backward from the February and spring deadlines. You may need to apply before you’ve moved.
- If your closing will land right at the start of school, ask me about a short lease or other options so you have proof of residency in time.
