Quick answer: The Wilmington NC airport is Wilmington International Airport (ILM), about 10 minutes from downtown off 23rd Street. Seven airlines fly nonstop to roughly 25 cities, including year-round service to Charlotte, Atlanta, New York LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, Washington National, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Miami. Daily parking runs $9 to $24, and the airport asks you to arrive about 90 minutes before your flight — which, at an airport this size, is usually plenty.
I’m Tabi, a REALTOR® with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage, and the airport comes up in almost every relocation conversation I have: “If we move to Wilmington, can we still get back to see family?” The short version is yes — and after years of flying out of big-city airports, ILM might be the quality-of-life upgrade nobody tells you about. Here’s the whole picture, with every number dated and sourced.
Where the Wilmington NC airport is (and why that matters)
ILM sits at 1740 Airport Blvd, just off 23rd Street and MLK Jr. Parkway on the north side of the city. From downtown Wilmington it’s about a 10-minute drive; from Ogden and Mayfaire about 15; from Wrightsville Beach, Leland, or Porters Neck roughly 20 to 25; and from Hampstead or Carolina Beach about 30, traffic depending. There is no hour-long airport slog here — for most of the area, door to terminal is shorter than the security line at the airport you’re probably used to.
Airlines and nonstop destinations at ILM

As of October 2026, flyILM lists seven airlines and about 25 nonstop destinations. Year-round nonstops:
- American: Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami, New York LaGuardia, Philadelphia, Washington National
- Delta: Atlanta, New York LaGuardia
- United: Newark
- Breeze: Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Hartford, Providence, Long Island (Islip), Akron-Canton
- Avelo: New Haven
Seasonal nonstops add Boston (American, Delta, and JetBlue), Chicago O’Hare (American and United), Denver (United), Minneapolis-St. Paul (Delta and Sun Country), and Avelo routes to Baltimore, Nashville, Rochester, Tampa, and Wilmington, Delaware. Schedules change often — confirm on flyILM’s airline page or with the airline before you book around a specific route.
For anywhere ILM doesn’t fly nonstop, the year-round hub routes do the work: Charlotte, Atlanta, Dallas, and the New York and Washington airports connect you to almost everywhere with one stop.
What parking costs at ILM
All lots are steps or a short shuttle from the terminal, and every lot gives you the first 5 minutes free (flyILM, October 2026):
- Lot A (short term): $1 per hour, $24 daily max
- Lot B (long term): $1 per hour, $15 daily max
- Lot C (economy): $1 per hour, $12 daily max
- Shuttle lot (economy): $9 per day, with a free shuttle every 5 to 7 minutes
There’s also a free cell phone lot off Airport Blvd for picking people up. And parking is about to get easier: a brand-new parking garage is scheduled to open in November 2026 as part of the airport’s expansion — more on that in my ILM airport expansion post.
What flying out of ILM is actually like

The airport asks travelers to arrive about 90 minutes before departure, and TSA PreCheck is available at the checkpoint. In practice, the whole front half of the trip — park, walk in, check a bag, clear security — is measured in minutes, not hours. Rental car counters sit right in the terminal next to baggage claim, and rideshare pickup is just outside the doors. ILM served about 1.8 million total passengers in 2025, which sounds big until you remember Charlotte serves that many in about a week — this is still very much a park-walk-fly airport.
Frequently asked questions
What airport do you fly into for Wilmington, NC?
Wilmington International Airport (ILM), about 10 minutes north of downtown Wilmington. Despite the city sharing a name with Wilmington, Delaware, ILM is the Wilmington NC airport — double-check that airport code when you book.
Is ILM a small airport?
Yes, in the best way. It served about 1.8 million passengers in 2025 with seven airlines and around 25 nonstop destinations, and it’s in the middle of a roughly $300 million expansion adding a parking garage, a new entrance, and eventually more gates.
How early should I get to the Wilmington airport?
The airport recommends about 90 minutes before departure. Holiday mornings and the first bank of 5-6am departures are the only times the checkpoint really stacks up.
Does Amtrak serve Wilmington, NC?
No. Getting here without a car means flying into ILM or connecting through Raleigh or Charlotte.
