Fortuna Cucina Italiana in Wilmington, NC: Fresh Pasta, Lemon Wallpaper and Our New Date Night

Last updated

Wilmington has plenty of Italian, but Fortuna is the one that instantly became our new date-night spot. It opened in May 2026 in the old Blue Surf space at the Arboretum, and the glow-up is almost unfair: lemon wallpaper, round mirrors, a bar that looks like it was airlifted in from the Amalfi Coast, and a scratch kitchen rolling fresh pasta every day. This is the newest entry in my Wilmington restaurant guide, and it earned the spot fast.

The short version: Fortuna Cucina Italiana is upscale-but-warm Italian at 414 Arboretum Drive, from the same hospitality group behind Kipos. Dinner only, closed Sundays, and it books out — reservations are highly recommended. Jon and I shared the bread, a shrimp appetizer and the braised beef pasta with wine, and dinner for two ran about $100–150. Skip the shrimp, double the pasta. Go hungry and do not skip the bread.

Rosé, a dessert martini, and that lemon wallpaper. Date night achieved.

Why it’s our new date night

Fortuna is full-on special-occasion territory without feeling stiff. The dining room is bright and a little cheeky — lemons on the walls, vintage prints, a checkerboard floor by the bar — and the menu is the serious part: handmade pastas, a big wine list, and a limited-quantity porter steak that sells out most nights. It comes from Giorgios Hospitality Group, the same folks behind Kipos out at Wrightsville Beach, and you can feel that polish in the service.

Jon and I came for a date night, and the room won me over before the food even hit the table. Sunny lemon wallpaper, round mirrors, that Amalfi-style bar glowing in the corner: it feels like a little Italian vacation tucked into a shopping center off Military Cutoff. We started with the bread (warm, sesame-crusted, dangerous) and a shrimp appetizer, split the braised beef pasta (goodness, it was good), and lingered over our wine way longer than we planned. It’s the kind of place that makes an ordinary weeknight feel like an occasion, and that’s exactly what we want from a date night.

What to order

Start with the bread. Non-negotiable. Then go straight for the braised beef pasta: rich, tender, handmade, and so good I’d order twice as much next time. Honest take on the shrimp appetizer: I’d pass on it again. It’s on the pricier end for three head-on shrimp, and that money is better spent on a second pasta. Next time I’m also eyeing the dishes other locals rave about: the meatballs, the burrata with prosciutto, the sweet corn and crab ravioli, the tiramisu, and that limited-quantity porter steak if it’s still on the board when you sit down. Heads up on portions: this isn’t Olive Garden. The pastas aren’t huge plates meant to send you home with leftovers; they’re high-end, homemade indulgence, so order accordingly (see above re: twice as much pasta).

Book the table. Seriously.

Fortuna got popular almost immediately, and it’s dinner-only with a room that isn’t huge — which means walking in on a Friday at 7pm is a gamble you will probably lose. Reservations are highly recommended, and the earlier seatings are the easiest to get. Book ahead on fortunawilmington.com, especially for weekends, anniversaries, or any night you’ve promised someone tiramisu.

If you’re moving to the Ogden / Mayfaire side of town

Fortuna sits on the Military Cutoff corridor, right in the sweet spot a lot of relocating buyers end up loving: fifteen minutes to Wrightsville Beach, shopping and restaurants you can get to without touching College Road, and neighborhoods from townhomes to waterfront customs. “A real date-night restaurant five minutes from the house” is exactly the kind of thing that makes this side of town feel like a win. If that’s the life you’re picturing, my Ogden / Mayfaire guide covers the streets, the trade-offs and what homes actually cost there.
