Thinking about moving to Pender County, NC? When people picture life around Wilmington, they usually stop at the New Hanover County line. But some of my favorite pockets of coastal Carolina sit just a little farther north — where the beaches are quieter, the pace is slower, and a small town will still hand you a blueberry the size of a quarter in June.
If you’re relocating to the area and want more elbow room, a shorter bridge to the sand, or a genuine small-town Main Street, Pender deserves a real look. Here’s your local’s cheat sheet.
The beaches: Topsail Island
Pender County’s coastline is anchored by Topsail Island, a 26-mile barrier island shared with Onslow County to the north. Two of its three towns sit in Pender:
Surf City is the island’s hub — the closest thing Topsail has to a downtown, with a walkable stretch of shops, ice cream, tackle stores, and casual seafood, plus the newer high-rise bridge that finally ended the old swing-bridge traffic jams. It’s family-friendly, low-key, and a favorite for first-time island buyers.
Topsail Beach occupies the quiet southern tip of the island. This is the sleepy, residential end — no high-rises, no chain anything, just wide beaches, the historic Missiles & More Museum, and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue nearby. If your dream is a porch, a golf cart, and sea turtles nesting out front, this is your zip code.
North Topsail Beach rounds out the island (that end sits in Onslow County), offering some of the most undeveloped, dune-lined stretches on the whole coast.
The trade-off with Topsail versus Wrightsville or Carolina Beach is simple: a longer drive from downtown Wilmington in exchange for smaller crowds, easier parking, and — often — more house for your money. For anyone moving to Pender County, NC, that trade is an easy one to love.
The mainland: Hampstead & Burgaw
Not all of Pender’s appeal is on the sand.
Hampstead is the fast-growing bridge between Wilmington and the island — a commuter-friendly stretch along Highway 17 with waterfront neighborhoods on the Intracoastal Waterway, new construction, and the self-appointed title of “Seafood Capital” thanks to its annual spot fish celebration. For buyers who want to be near the water and still commute into Wilmington, Hampstead is the sweet spot.
Burgaw, the county seat, is small-town North Carolina at its most photogenic: a historic courthouse square, a restored train depot, locally owned shops, and the kind of Main Street that hosts a festival for a berry. It’s inland, affordable, and full of character.
The events worth putting on your calendar
Pender packs a real festival calendar for its size:
NC Blueberry Festival (Burgaw, mid-June) — The county’s signature event. Downtown Burgaw fills with 175-plus artisan vendors, fresh local blueberries, food trucks, live music, and children’s activities to celebrate the berry that built this region. It’s pure small-town joy.
Topsail Sounds (Topsail Beach, summer) — A free summer concert series at the Topsail Beach Town Center with live music and food trucks on warm evenings.
Hampstead Alive After Five (Hampstead, summer) — Free concerts at Kiwanis Park all season long.
Autumn With Topsail (Surf City, October) — A three-day festival (October 16–18 in 2026) with an artists’ and crafts court of 100-plus regional makers, live music, and food, beer, and wine.
Ocean Fest (Surf City, October) — An award-winning, fully eco-friendly festival with island-inspired music, adaptive surfing, and a surf competition.
NC Spot Festival (Hampstead, November) — Pender’s longest-running festival, celebrating the humble spot fish with fish plates, bands, food and craft vendors, rides, and Hampstead’s biggest fireworks show of the year.
New Year’s Eve Blueberry Drop (Burgaw, December 31) — Historic downtown Burgaw drops a giant blueberry at midnight, with live music and family fun.
